Nicor Contractors Questioned By Burr Ridge Cops: Report

Men told officers they lacked identifications showing they worked for the utility, police say.

BURR RIDGE, IL — Two men wearing reflective vests told a resident and then the police earlier this month that they worked as independent contractors for Nicor Gas, according to a police report.

When asked, the men also told the resident and police that they had no identification cards showing that they work for AGD on behalf of Nicor, a natural gas company.

About 5 p.m. May 17, the men were knocking on doors saying they had a list of houses they were servicing, but said they had yet to get identifications. One of the residents called police.

In an email to Patch, Nicor spokeswoman Jennifer Golz confirmed AGD, a contractor, had been in Burr Ridge completing routine survey work on behalf of Nicor. She said Nicor is following up with AGD about the alleged lack of identifications.

It is Nicor's policy for its representatives and contractors who visit homes and businesses to provide Nicor identifications, Golz said.

In 2018, Nicor's field employees began wearing company uniforms branded with the company name and logo — a measure to promote the safety of customers and employees, Golz said.

"Wearing a uniform allows customers to easily identify our employees as they work to provide clean, safe, reliable and affordable natural gas," she said. "In addition to navy work pants, field employees wear a variety of beige shirts, navy jackets and hats, all with the Nicor Gas logo. Even our neon yellow safety vests feature our name and logo."

Golza said customers who want to confirm that a representative is scheduled to perform work should call 888-642-6748.

In the May 17 incident, Burr Ridge police told the men from AGD that they should have identifications to show residents the next time they come to town.
