Pandemic 'Tumultuously Tiring': Burr Ridge Mayor

Burr Ridge has more coronavirus cases per capita than other nearby suburbs surveyed by Patch.

BURR RIDGE, IL — Since the beginning of the pandemic, Burr Ridge has seen more coronavirus cases per capita than other nearby suburbs surveyed by Patch.

As of Sunday, the total number of cases since March in Burr Ridge was 296, up by a dozen from a week earlier, according to county health authorities. That represents a 4 percent increase.

As of Sunday, Burr had 27.5 coronavirus cases per thousand people, worse than its neighbors surveyed. The figure compares to 16.2 in La Grange Park, 16.3 in Darien, 19.5 in Western Springs, 20.9 in Clarendon Hills and DuPage County, 21.9 in Elmhurst, 23.5 in Hinsdale, 26 in suburban Cook County and 26.5 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

Burr Ridge's pandemic-related deaths numbered 24 as of Sunday, government figures show. That number is up by one from a week before.

In his weekly coronavirus statement Friday, Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso said a temptation exists to become complacent to the presence of the coronavirus and almost give in to it being here permanently.

"The roller-coaster ride with COVID-19 remains tumultuous and daring — tumultuously tiring and daring us to let our guard down so it can spread, infect, sicken and sometimes kill or permanently debilitate us," Grasso said. "We must not quit; we cannot let that happen. Keep fighting, keep wearing masks, avoid larger gatherings for long periods, wash hands — and remind others to remain vigilant."

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 287,930, up 5 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 8,601 state residents.

Nationally, 7.1 million people have caught the virus, up 5 percent from the week before. A total of 204,033 people have died from the virus in the United States.
