Willowbrook Man Faces Felony Charges After Scuffle With Deputies

BURR RIDGE, IL — A 31-year-old Willowbrook man faces three felony counts after authorities said that he hit and injured three DuPage County Sheriff’s deputies while they were attempting to arrest him during a court appearance on Friday.

A DuPage County judge has set bond at $150,000 (10 percent to apply) for Marcus Jenkins, who was arrested Friday morning when he was appearing in court on a domestic battery charge, the DuPage County State’s Attorney said in a news release. Jenkins was in court when a judge ordered him to be taken into custody and as deputies approached him, Jenkins reportedly said, “I’m not going into custody”, the release said.

As deputies attempted to place Jenkins in handcuffs, they managed only to get the handcuffs around his left wrist. Authorities said that Jenkins then started flailing his arms and attempted to pull away from the deputies. Additional deputies arrived and were able to get Jenkins onto the ground but as deputies ordered him to place his arms behind his back, Jenkins refused and began kicking his legs and pulling his arms under his body to prevent deputies from placing handcuffs on him, the release said.

Officials said three deputies were injured while attempting to take Jenkins into custody and were treated after the incident.

“I commend the officers involved in this incident for their dedication and commitment to the safety of our courtrooms,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in the release “Their actions protected not only courtroom personnel, but also members of the public who were in the courtroom at the time.

"Hundreds of people enter our courthouse on a daily basis and without fail, our deputies consistently maintain the highest level of professionalism to ensure their safety and security. Thankfully, the injuries sustained by our deputies do not appear to be serious at this time.”

DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick also commended deputies for their actions and for their professional behavior during the incident.

“Our deputies executed good tactics, good training and showed proper restraint in the face of a suspect acting violently,” Mendrick said. “I’m thankful our professional deputies were able to resolve this with a minimum use of force and no serious injuries to our deputies or suspect.”

Jenkins was charged with three counts of resisting or obstructing a police officer causing injury, which is a Class 4 felony. He is scheduled to appear in court on the charges on Friday.
