Cary, Algonquin Subarea Plan Moves Forward
The project includes transforming former grand and sand mining areas into recreation areas, providing access to lakes and a trail system.

CARY AND ALGONQUIN, IL — Plans to restore several hundred acres of land used for sand and gravel mining along Route 31 is moving forward.
Both the villages of Cary and Algonquin are teaming up to make the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning's Algonquin-Cary subarea plan a reality. The plan establishes future land use for east of Route 31, which spans 250 acres and runs from north of Klasen Road.
Other areas eyed for future development include subareas east of Route 31 and south of Klasen Road as well as space west of Route 31.

Officials are looking to create a "unique destination" to bring "communities together by 2035," a continuous trail system and connections to downtown Algonquin and Cary, the Prairie Trail, Fox Bluff Conservation area, the Fox River and nearby communities, according to a recent Shaw Media article. The hope is to create a space for recreation and allow for public access to the lakes, CMAP Associate Planner Dustin Calliari said at a recent Cary Village Board meeting.
Next steps include officials with both villages continuing to collaborate with each other and other agencies, including the McHenry County Division of Transportation, the McHenry County Conservation District and neighboring tunes, to fine-tune details on the project, according to the article.
