Court documents show that Grogan was driving a woman’s 2015 Hyundai sedan and she was sitting in the passenger seat.
Metra Director of Communications Michael Gillis said the woman told police Grogan began acting strangely and told her to get out of the car.
Grogan drove onto the Metra railroad crossing and parked the Hyundai on the tracks before he fled the car on foot, court documents show.
A Metra train crashed into the Hyundai a short time later. The female passenger was able to get out of the car before the train struck it, Gillis said.
Grogan’s actions put the woman and the train crew in danger, court documents said.
No injuries were reported and the train was only occupied by the conductor and an engineer, Gillis said.
Police officers located Grogan around 1 a.m. Sunday and the man ran from officers before surrendering shortly after.
Grogan refused to provide identification. He was transported to the McHenry County Jail where he remains held on a $22,500 bond.
A McHenry County judge ordered the man to undergo a fitness and psychological evaluation before he is released from jail.
