McHenry County Animal Control Scheduling For Rabies, Microchip Clinic
The MCAC will be holding two clinics for cats and dogs to help companion cat owners comply with a state law requiring rabies vaccinations.
The McHenry County Animal Control is encouraging pet owners to take advantage of its low-cost rabies and microchip clinics in November after reporting two cases of rabid bats inside McHenry County homes over the summer.
The MCAC will be holding two clinics for cats and dogs to help companion cat owners comply with a state law that took effect January 1 requiring cats to be rabies vaccinated.

The cost of vaccinating pets against rabies is much lower than the cost of treating rabies, and it is the best way to prevent the illness. Rabies is a virus that, once symptoms appear, is nearly always fatal.
“It’s equally important for indoor cats to receive a rabies vaccination. Not only is it required by state law, but it also keeps cats safe if they get outside and protects them if a wild animal such as a bat finds its way indoors,” said MCAC Director Maryellen Howell.

The cost of a one-year vaccination is $15 and $30 for three years. Vaccinations cost will include a free microchip during these two clinics. A microchip will be available for $5 during the two clinics for pets that are already vaccinated and registered. Registration fees are additional and vary depending on factors such as whether a pet is spayed or neutered. Registration is required by law in McHenry County and tags must be purchased at the time of vaccination.
In order to maintain social distancing measures, the clinics will be drive-thru and payment are cash or check only.
All pets must be leashed or in a carrier. Please do not bring animals that are in heat. Information about bite history or dogs that are easily stressed will be requested when making an appointment.

The first clinic is 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m on Nov. 17. A second clinic will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m on Nov. 19. Both clinics will be at the McHenry County Animal Control and Adoption Center, 100 N. Virginia Street in Crystal Lake.
