Coroner: Blood Clot to Lungs Killed McHenry County Deputy
Deputy Dwight Maness died during a rehabilitation session Monday. He was 47.

Maness was injured nearly one year ago when a man opened fire on him and his partner during a well-being check in Holiday Hills. He was rushed to the hospital on Monday after suffering a cardio-pulmonary arrest during a rehabilitation session, McHenry County Coroner Anne Majewski said Tuesday.
He was pronounced dead at 1:34 p.m. at Centegra Medical Center in McHenry. An autopsy conducted Tuesday revealed Maness died of a pulmonary embolism, which is a blood clot to the lungs.
The coroner will determine a manner of death on a future date, Majewski said.
McHenry County State’s Attorney Louis Bianchi told the Chicago Tribune that his office will investigate if Maness’ death was related to the injuries he suffered when shot by Scott Peters in Holiday Hills last October.
Peters is serving a 135-year prison sentence for opening fire on Maness and his partner, Deputy Khalia Satkiewicz, through his front door with an AR-15 rifle at 1:30 in the morning on Oct. 16, 2014. Maness was shot in the leg and back. As the two deputies sought cover, Peters ran after them and fired more shots.
Maness recently turned 47. His birthday fell on the same day as the vigil for Lt. Joe Gliniewicz, and Maness and his wife, Sue, attended, according to the Northwest Herald.
“We went to celebrate life,” he told the Northwest Herald in a Sept. 3 interview. “Not to mourn, but to celebrate [Gliniewicz’s] life as well as mine.”
Maness was committed to walking again and the nearly 8-year veteran of the sheriff’s office was eager to return to work, Maness told the Northwest Herald. He was also looking forward to riding his motorcycle again. His doctors told him he was healing better than anticipated, according to the article.
