One person died and two others were severely injured after a car crash at 5:45 p.m. Monday, April 28, on Pyott Road south of Rakow Road, according to Crystal Lake Police.

Two cars collided head on before a third vehicle crashed into them, according to police. The occupants of the first two cars suffered extensive injuries, and one driver became entrapped and had to be extricated by Crystal Lake Fire Rescue personnel, police said.

The driver of the third vehicle died of injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. Officials are withholding the identities of the people involved in the crash while notifying families.

After an initial investigation, police believe a four-door Toyota was traveling south on Pyott Road from Rakow Road when the car crossed into the northbound lane and crashed into a four-door Honda. The third vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe, was headed northbound on Pyott Road when it was struck by the Honda, police said.

The Honda's driver died on the scene of the crash, while the Toyota's driver was transported to Centegra-Northern Illinois Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, police reported. The driver and a passenger in the Tahoe were transported to Sherman Hospital in Elgin, with injuries police believe to be non-life threatening.

Police closed Pyott Road after the crash and emergency crews remained on scene for several hours. The roadway was expected to reopen by 9:30 p.m., according to police.

The Crystal Lake Police Department and McHenry County Coroner's Office are still investigating the crash, according to police, and no charges had been filed as of Monday night.
