Classic Cinemas To Temporarily Close Theaters After Reopening

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — The reopening of Classic Cinemas' theaters will be a short-lived one, according to a Facebook post from theater officials.

The theater chain, which reopened many locations in late June, announced Tuesday that it will temporarily close again after Thursday due to "the lack of new movies and the extra costs," which have made the "current business model unsustainable." Classic Cinemas added that they hope to reopen in the future, but will not be relaunching the Classic Cinemas To-Go campaign.

They wrote, "We are in this for the long term, so we look forward to welcoming you back just as soon as the outlook improves and new movies are released."

The announcement brought a flood of comments and support on Facebook. One resident wrote, "This too shall pass, and we look forward to our new normal and will embrace all we will learn." Another wrote, "This saddens me but I understand. My son really enjoyed a little normalcy watching The Trolls yesterday. And your “Welcome Back” message got me a little teary eyed. We will continue to support in any way that we can!!!"

Residents can support Classic Cinemas by buying gift cards for use at a future movie.

Classic Cinemas has locations in Carpentersville, St. Charles, Elk Grove Village, Oak Park, Downers Grove and Elmhurst, along with other locations in Wisconsin and Illinois.
