DGS Softball Team to Compete for State Championship

A state trophy ceremony is planned for the DGS girls softball team on Sunday, June 12.

Downers Grove, IL - On June 12 the Girls Softball Team at Downers Grove South High School will be recognized by school and local officials for its 2016 State Trophy.

The ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. in the cafeteria at South High, which is located at 1436 Norfolk in Downers Grove.

Members of the community are welcome to attend, and refreshments will be served.

The team, which is coached by Ron Havelka, is one of the four teams competing for the IHSA State Championship, 4A division. South High will play Normal West on Friday, June 10 at 5 p.m. in East Peoria.

If the team wins, students will play the championship game on Saturday, June 11 at 5:30 p.m. (The game for third place will be on Saturday at 3 p.m.)

“We are excited for the opportunity that the girls have created for themselves,” says South High Principal Ed Schwartz. “They work hard, and we are proud to have them represent Downers Grove South High School.”

“All of us applaud Coach Havelka for his success not only with this year’s team, but for all the teams he has coached throughout his 23-year career,” says South High Athletic Director Randy Konstans. “His winning track record is proof of his dedication and focus on developing quality players, and this is what happens to good people who work hard and commit themselves to the core values of our program.”

Havelka has coached at South High since 1992, and is a graduate of Downers Grove North High School. He will retire from coaching after this season.
