DOWNERS GROVE, IL — The Downers Grove Fire Department is offering safety tips for residents this holiday season. Each fire station has a wreath with red bulbs that will be changed to white for each holiday-related fire. The goal is to keep the wreaths red.

The fire department recommends the following steps to make sure trees and lights are safe this holiday season:

  • Don't allow trees to block exit paths in your home
  • Keep live trees at least three feet from any heat source
  • Check water levels daily for live trees.
  • Dispose of trees and boughs before they dry out.
  • Don't connect more than three strings of lights together.
  • Make sure lights are approved for indoor or outdoor use, depending on where you plan to use them.

The "Keep the Wreaths Red" initiative runs through Jan. 1.
