Downers Grove To Vote On Cannabis Businesses

The issue of cannabis businesses in Downers Grove will come up for a vote Dec. 8.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — The village of Downers Grove is poised to take a vote Dec. 8 on whether to permit cannabis businesses within the village.

At Tuesday's village council meeting, council member Rich Kulovany, who said "as you know I didn't plan to support this," expressed favor of cannabis businesses, saying, "I believe this is becoming more mainstream."

Kulovany referenced the referendum in which Naperville residents favored cannabis as part of his decision-making process, saying he believed the results would have been "similar" in Downers Grove.

If approved, the proposed zoning amendments would permit three recreational and medical dispensaries within village limits. Those dispensaries would have to be located at least 1,300 feet from schools, day cares and public parks.

The village is also proposing a 3 percent tax on gross receipts that would go into effect July 2021, if the measure is approved.
