Meteorologists Solve Muddy Mystery Of Splotches On Suburban Cars

Drivers in Downers Grove, Naperville, Aurora, and other western suburbs woke to find their cars spattered with a mysterious coating of dust.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — If you woke up to a car covered with what looked like muddy splotches Sunday, you weren't alone. Residents in Naperville, Aurora, Downers Grove, and nearby suburbs flocked to car washes to remove the mysterious layer of grime that had seemed to materialize on their cars overnight.

According to local meteorologists from NBC and WGN, the splattery brown pattern you may have seen on your car was topsoil from winds that swept it from farm fields and into the western suburbs. In short, the wind stirred up the dirt and then the rain pummeled cars with it.

In the end, this baffling inconvenience for car owners and unexpected boon for car wash owners was just some artistic mudwork by Mother Nature.
