Downers Grove To Prune 150-Year-Old Cottonwood Tree
The tree has been part of Downers Grove since before the Tivoli Theatre was built.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — One of Downers Grove's oldest landmarks is about to get a makeover. The large cottonwood tree on the Rogers Street parkway just east of Highland, which is more than 150 years old, will be pruned Aug. 19 to help it stay safe and healthy, officials say.
The choice to prune the large cottonwood tree comes after an assessment was done that recommended "significant pruning" as an alternative to total removal.
The tree maintenance includes removing two lower branches that have become over extended. Some upper branches and other dead material will also be removed.

Officials say the cottonwood tree pruning is another example of the village focusing more effort into ensuring that parkway trees are maintained. Currently, there are more than 23,000 parkway trees in the village.
