Coroners IDs Bicyclist Killed In Hit And Run
A second bicyclist was in critical condition following the Tuesday hit-and-run. Elgin police said the driver was arrested later.
ELGIN, IL — A 52-year-old Bartlett woman who died after being hit by a vehicle while out biking in Elgin Tuesday has been identified as Sandra Sampey, according to a statement from the Kane County Coroner's Office. Sampey was taken to St. Joseph Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Preliminary results from an autopsy show Sampey died from multiple injuries sustained during the collision, according to the coroner's office. The vehicle struck a second bicyclist, a 58-year-old Bartlett man, who was listed in critical condition as of late Tuesday, police said.
The crash occurred shortly after the vehicle was reported to have been involved in different hit-and-run about 4 p.m. near East Chicago Street and Villa Court, police said. An Elgin police officer responding to 911 calls about that crash was waved down by the victim, who was following the vehicle, police said.

The officer tried to stop the vehicle, but it fled at a high rate of speed, police said. A short time later, the vehicle collided with two bicycles near Raymond Street and Purify Drive, police said.
The driver then fled on foot but was taken into custody after a two-hour search, police said.

The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is assisting the Elgin Police Department's Traffic Unit with the investigation of the incident.
