Double lung transplant gives Elgin girl a second chance
Ashley Ramirez is recovering after the transplant surgery in St. Louis.

Ashley Ramirez underwent a double lung transplant in early October at St. Louis Children's Hospital, according to the Daily Herald.
The 11-year-old Elgin girl was born with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease which causes lung infections and restricts breathing. Most people with the disease die around the age of 40.
Ashley's short life has been filled with hospital visits and proceedures to help her breath and fight off infections. In March, the Ramirez family temporarily moved to St. Louis so Ashley could be evaluated for a lung transplant.

She qualified for a lung transplant in late September and was matched to donor four days later. Maribel Ramirez, Ashley's mother cried with joy when she heard the news. Within a week after the proceedure, Ashley's new lungs were working fine.
The cost of transplants can exceed $500,000. Most of Ashley's medical costs are covered by insurance, but the family needs an estimated $50,000 to cover expenses related to the procedure.
