Elgin Breakfast Rotary Awards $7,750 in Local Scholarships

Elgin, Illinois 06/24/21 — Seven students were awarded cash scholarships during the weekly Elgin Breakfast Rotary Club meeting at the Elgin Country Club. All of the students are from the Elgin area.

Five of the students received scholarships from the G. Michael Greene fund. These students are graduating seniors heading off to university. Mr Green was a U-46 teacher and past-president of the Rotary club. He passed away in an unfortunate accident. A scholarship was created in his honor to help make university attendance affordable.

Two of the students received a Vocational Scholarship from the Rotary District 6440 fund. One of these students is enrolled in an HVAC Certification Program and the other an Electrician Certification Program.

One nursing program student was awarded a Business 25 Scholarship which commemorates the 2014 25th founding anniversary of the Club. Twenty-five local businesses donated $1,000 each to fund this scholarship for 25 years. Applicants must be attending a non-degree vocational certification program.

This was the last Rotary meeting for club President Mike Mckay to lead. The incoming President, Mike Warren, will take over with the new Rotary year July 1st. President McKay said “it was so fitting that my last meeting centered around what we as Rotarians love to do; give money away to help those in need. I am grateful our small but mighty club was able to accomplish so much this past year despite the obvious obstacles. Our incoming President will be focused on building our membership. We have so much opportunity to offer young business people they cannot get through social media. Together as a group we make a greater impact not only in our communities but globally. In addition, club members build a business network that will help them throughout their careers.”
