Elgin man arrested for cocaine possession told police he fears cartel's retaliation

The man reported receiving death threats after he stole drugs and money from a cartel

Chavez Esquivel, a 39-year-old Elgin man, met with Mount Prospect Police on Sunday after he took nearly $30,000 in cash and over two pounds of cocaine from a drug cartel that employed him, according to the Daily Herald. Police met Esquivel on the 400 block of E. Euclid Ave in Mount Prospect, where he revealed a duffle bag containing the drugs and money.

Esquivel told police that he was responsible for storing and distributing large amounts of cocaine in various locations around Chicago. The man decided to steal money and drugs so he could run away, but he feared for his life after receiving death threats from members of the cartel.

The amount of cocaine Esquivel had could land him in prison for up to 60 years. He has no prior criminal history. Esquivel is due in court later this month.
