ELGIN, IL — Elgin looks set to get its first significant snowfall of the season with a storm expected to hit the Kane County region Tuesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the Kane County area that runs from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday morning. Forecasts are calling for snowfall to start around 5 p.m. Tuesday in Elgin, with precipitation to continue through Tuesday night.

Elgin residents should expect rain, snow, freezing rain and sleet until about 5 a.m. Wednesday, when the wintry mix turns to rain. Temperatures are expected to rise to about 33 degrees by 3 a.m.

National Weather Service forecasts indicate there could be 2 to 4 inches of snow and sleet in Elgin by Wednesday morning. There's a chance for more snow after 11 a.m.

There is a 100 percent chance of precipitation Tuesday and Wednesday in Elgin, according to the National Weather Service.

Thursday is expected to be partly cloudy with a high near 28 degrees, though winter weather could return just after the start of the New Year, with a slight chance of snow after 1 a.m. Friday.
