Stay Cool, Elgin: Cooling Centers Open, Tips for Saying Safe

ELGIN, IL — With extreme heat in the forecast, city officials are reminding residents to keep cool, check on neighbors and take care of pets. A list of cooling centers within the city can be found on the city of Elgin's website.

Here are some other hot weather tips:

• Stay hydrated, even when you don't feel thirsty
• Avoid alcoholic & caffeinated beverages
• Avoid overexertion and strenuous outdoor activities if possible
• Take advantage of cooling centers, public pools and air-conditioned stores and malls during periods of extreme heat
• Offer pets extra water and provide shady refuge where they can escape direct sun
• Lock car doors and trunks, and keep keys out of children's reach
• Don't leave your pet in the car
• Keep pets' paws away from hot pavement
