Thousands Raised For Family Of Teen Hit, Killed On Randall

Alexis Horton, 13, of Elgin died after being hit by a truck while crossing Randall Road last week.

ELGIN, IL – In just five days, nearly $12,000 has been raised for the family of Alexis Horton who was tragically killed when she was hit by a truck while crossing Randall Road in Elgin. The money will be used to cover the costs for Horton's funeral, which was this past week, as a way to take "some of the stress off of" Horton's family, according to a GoFundMe page, which was started by an Elgin woman. As of Friday morning, the online fundraiser had brought in $11,540 for the teen’s family, nearing its $12,000 goal.

Horton, an eighth grader at Burlington Middle School, was crossing South Randall Road in the 200 block of Randall at about 10:19 p.m. on Jan. 3 when a 2004 Ford Pickup truck hit her, police said. The 13-year-old Elgin girl was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin. She died later that night, according to the GoFundMe page.

An autopsy revealed Horton died from multiple injuries. Toxicology samples have been collected and sent to a forensic lab, according to the coroner's office.

Horton is being remembered by family and friends as a beautiful, sweet and upbeat girl. Her death has "rocked" the local community and the "Horton family is seeking to understand and heal over this devastating loss," Carole Lynn, of Elgin, wrote on the GoFundMe page.

"She was a bright light in so many lives and will be in our hearts always," wrote one woman on the GoFundMe page.

Horton's death happened over winter break for her fellow Burlington 301 students. Students returned to classes on Jan. 7 and school officials said counselors, social workers, psychologists, support personnel and comfort dogs were on hand to offer support to those mourning the teen's death, the Daily Herald reports.

Horton is survived by her mother, Donna, and her dad, Bill, as well as her siblings, Dakota, Kimberly, Daniel, Christina and Neena, according to her obituary. Her visitation was held on Jan. 8 and the funeral was on Jan. 9.

Two days after Horton's death, a 44-year-old Elgin man was was killed after being struck by a car while crossing Larkin Avenue in Elgin. A Toyota Rav 4 was heading west on Larkin when it Edward Milosz who was walking in the westbound lane on Larkin Avenue at about 9:32 p.m. on Jan. 5, according to a post on the Elgin Police Department Facebook page.

He was also taken to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital where he died.

Milosz funeral was held on Thursday.
