Elmhurst Car Burglars Strike Small With Strange Steals

These thieves focused on expired credit cards and coffee products.

Among several car burglaries in Elmhurst throughout the past few days — most occurring overnight and involving unlocked cars parked in driveways — were a handful that were quite, well, strange.

An Elmhurst resident who lives on the 700 block of Chatham Ave. reported to the police Nov. 28 that sometime during the night before, someone had broken into two of their cars — though only odd items were missing.

The resident said they noticed the cars had been tampered with around 6 a.m. on the 28th. They said they’d kept their vehicles unlocked overnight.

The thief threw things all over the inside of the resident’s Volkswagen Jetta and Volkswagen EOS in the process of the burglary, police reports stated. An expired debit card and an expired credit card were missing from the Jetta.

The EOS, on the other hand, was missing a brown box that had contained coffee products.

In another incident that took place between 11 p.m. Nov. 27 and 7 a.m. Nov. 28, another resident living on the 700 block of Chatham Ave. woke up to find the armrest in his Nissan open and things scattered all over the front seat.

After checking his car, the man noticed that one can of energy drink and loose change had been stolen.

He’d also left his car unlocked overnight while it was parked in his driveway.

Nov. 28, a third resident from the 700 block of N. Willow Rd. reported to the police that his unlocked car had been entered during the night, the center console had been opened and items had been thrown around his front seats.

Among items stolen was a pair of his shoes.
