Elmhurst Trolley will transport shoppers, sightseers for free

City to open weekend service July 24 as experiment.

A free trolley service connecting Elmhurst citizens and visitors with the city’s shopping and cultural centers will start Friday through Sunday operation July 24 through Sept. 13 with the possibility of expansion.

Named the Explore Elmhurst Express, according to a city news release, the open air bus—it can be closed in inclement weather—will take people from the City Centre to the cultural campus containing the library and museum, then to the Spring Road and York and Vallette shopping districts before heading back downtown, according to Assistant City Manager Mike Kopp.

“This gives people a chance to hop on the trolley and get a look at the cultural campus and the other shopping districts,” Kopp said. He said service could expand beyond Sept. 13 or run more days if it is successful.

The service will run an hour long loop, according to the release. Approximate boarding times will be posted at each stop. There is also convenient parking located near each area.

In good weather the trolley will offer an open air ride but it can be quickly be converted to a “warm and cozy” sightseeing bus if the weather demands, according to the release. Riders can also get a discount card on board saving them 10 percent at participating shops and restaurants.
