EWAN stands ready to help those in need

Financial assistance is available for those struggling economically through the pandemic

The Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network (EWAN) would like to remind local families feeling an economic impact from the pandemic that it is here to help.

Anyone in Elmhurst who is having difficulty paying rent or mortgage or covering gas, electric, or water bills is invited to reach out for assistance by calling 630-782-6006. Due to the virus, all interactions are currently being handled over the phone. Volunteers process requests Monday through Friday from 10am-noon. The office will, however, be closed the week between Christmas and New Years.

“EWAN was created for times like these,” said Executive Director Jackie Crnkovich. “Our mission is to help local families weather the tough times. This is definitely such a time for many, but we are a resource people can take advantage of to relieve some of the economic stress.”

Elmhurst has not been immune to the hardships so many in the country are experiencing. Crnkovich noted that EWAN’s rental assistance has increased close to 200% this year and the typical number of new clients in a year has doubled. She fears the worst may lie ahead as the moratoriums on evictions and utility shut-offs are lifted.

“So far we have been able to handle the influx of requests due to the generosity of the Elmhurst community. It’s truly gratifying to see the people who are doing okay show such tremendous concern for those who are struggling,” Crnkovich said.
