ELMHURST, IL — A major water main break occurred Thursday on York Road north of Interstate 290, according to a city news release.

Residential and industrial areas north of Lake Street will experience very low or no water pressure until the leak is isolated and pressure can be restored to the system, the city said. It could take four hours to complete.

Once water service is restored, a precautionary boil order will be in place for drinking water until further notice.

During a precautionary boil order, only bottled water or water that has been brought to a rolling boil for five minutes should be consumed or used for brushing teeth, cooking, washing dishes, making ice or washing produce, the city said. It is still safe for residents to use water for washing hands, doing laundry, showering and flushing toilets.

Because of the size of the area affected, the city said it would be unable to hand-deliver timely notices to residents and businesses, the release said.
