Trevon Johnson's Family Plans Memorial, Continues to Question His Shooting Death

A memorial will take place this Sunday in Chicago.

A memorial service for 17-year-old Trevon Johnson, who was shot and killed by a DuPage County deputy early this week, has been planned for Sunday, family members told the Daily Herald.

According to the Herald, who spoke to Johnson’s uncle Alfonzo Singletary, a reverend at the Tabernacle Church of God in Christ in Chicago, the funeral services have been planned in spite of copious questions the family still has regarding the case.

Singletary told the Herald that “family members are at peace” at this time, but that they’re still looking for answers to explain Johnson’s death. According to police reports, the deputy who shot Johnson arrived at his unincorporated Villa Park residence in response to a domestic dispute call, said he believed Johnson was armed with a knife and proceeded to fire multiple shots.

Johnson was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Recordings of calls made by Johnson’s sister — the one who filed the initial domestic dispute claim — and brother revealed they thought he had access to weapons that night, in particular a kitchen carving knife, according to his brother. They said he was throwing glass, and screaming was prevalent background noise in both calls.

Singletary, as well as other members of Johnson's family, continue to stay true to claims that Johnson wasn’t armed at the time of the shooting.

“We’re aware of the multiple 911 calls being released, but there’s a few things that were said there that need to be clarified,” Singletary told the Herald, but refused to elaborate.

The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said the case remains open and the investigation ongoing.

According to the Herald, Johnson’s memorial service is slated for Sunday at 1233 W. 109th Place in Chicago. A funeral is planned for Jan. 14 at Hope Community Advent Christian Church at 5900 W. Iowa St. in Chicago.
