York Township Voters Weigh In On Taxes, Climate Change

Tax exemptions and carbon tax are the subject of referendums.

ELMHURST, IL — Voters in York Township, which includes part of Elmhurst, were asked two questions in advisory referendums Tuesday, giving clear-cut answers on both.

Voters were asked whether the state should "increase the residential and senior homeowner exemptions to help reduce property taxes."

In response, 82 percent of voters said they favored such a move. When exemptions are increased for a certain group of taxpayers, others pick up the slack because governing bodies' overall tax levies stay the same.

The other question on the York Township ballot read, "Should the U.S. Congress pass legislation to place a carbon fee on fossil fuel producers, to reduce emissions and abate climate change, and distribute the collected revenue equally to American households?"

Two-thirds of York Township voters supported the idea.

York Township is one of nine townships in DuPage County. It includes parts of Elmhurst, Downers Grove, Hinsdale, Lombard, Oak Brook, Villa Park, Glen Ellyn and Westmont.
