Rainfall Rates Across the Chicago Metro Area

A flood warning remains in effect this morning.

A flood warning remains in effect for much of the Chicago area through 10:30 a.m. Tuesday following rainfall of 2 to 5 inches across the Chicago area. According to the National Weather Service, these are the biggest of the recorded rainfall totals as of 4 a.m.:

  • 4.98 inches in Glen Ellyn
  • 4.54 inches in Elwood
  • 4.17 inches in Symerton
  • 3.21 inches in Lincolnwood
  • 3.09 inches at the DuPage Airport in West Chicago
  • 2.56 inches at O’Hare Airport

Standing water in roadways will continue to be an issue Tuesday. The NWS says flooding has been reported in Chicago, Aurora, Joliet, Naperville, Elgin, Cicero, Arlington Heights, Evanston, Schaumburg, Bolingbrook, Skokie, Des Plaines, Orland Park, Tinley Park, Oak Lawn, Berwyn, Mount Prospect, Wheaton, Hoffman Estates and Oak Park.

One person is reported dead after a car went into a retention pond just before midnight in Romeoville, in Will County.

Overall, west suburban Kane County has seen the highest rainfall rates in the past 24 hours following severe weather on Monday, according to data collected by the Illinois U.S. Geological Survey website.

In the past seven days, the DuPage River near Plainfield recorded the highest rainfall rate of 15.3 inches, according to the USGS data. The National Accelerator Lab near West Chicago had 6.35 inches of rain in the past week.

Moderate flooding is being reported on the Des Plaines River at Riverside, according to the National Weather Service. The flood stage is 7 feet and as of 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, the river was at 8 feet.

The East Branch of the DuPage River in Bolingbrook also recorded moderate flooding Tuesday morning. The flood stage is 19.5 feet and as of 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, the river was at 20.98 feet.
