Trick-or-Treating A Go In Evergreen Park: Mayor

Mayor Sexton will recommend that village trustees approve tick-or-treating hours in Evergreen Park. Other social distance events planned.

EVERGREEN PARK, IL — It looks like trick-or-treating is a go in Evergreen Park. Mayor Jim Sexton is recommending to village board members that they approve trick-or-treating hours in when they meet later this month. The hours will be from 3 to 6 p.m. on Halloween, which this year falls on Saturday, Oct. 31.

“I love seeing the kids out trick-or-treating,” Sexton said in an email to residents. “I want to see that happen again this year, [with] adjustments.”

Despite recommendations from the Centers for Disease and Prevention that trick-or-treating be postponed this year due to the pandemic, Sexton said he is relying on the common sense of families and residents who wish to participate “to make the necessary precautions.”

Sexton told Patch that trick-or-treating will proceed on Halloween. The village board will meet Oct. 19 where trustees are expected to lay out some parameters and guidelines for residents to follow for safe trick-or-treating.

Later this week, fliers will be available on the village website designating a “trick-or-treat household” or a “see you next Halloween household.” The fliers will be available to pick up at Evergreen Park Village Hall, 9418 S. Kedzie Ave., or at the community center, 3450 W. 97th St.

Vulnerable persons are encouraged not to feel pressured to participate in Halloween this year. YouTube is also filled with fun gadgets people have made to safely dispense candy to trick-or-treaters from a safe social distance.

“Much can change in the next few weeks (including the weather. . .remember the Halloween blizzard?) but for now, this is our plan,” Sexton said.

This is one of many examples on YouTube of fun gadgets people have created to hand out Halloween candy during the pandemic.
