Virtual Reality Experience Lets You Inside The Unabomber's Cabin

Evergreen Park's most notorious native gets a new virtual reality treatment that immerses visitors in the Unabomber investigation.

EVERGREEN PARK, IL -- Evergreen Park’s most infamous native is getting a new treatment through virtual reality. HTC VIVE with Immersion and Newseum has unveiled a new virtual reality experience that immerses users in the story of the Unabomber, from the FBI investigation to his capture in the remote Montana mountains. VR technology lets visitors walk around inside Ted Kaczynski’s actual cabin and see the typewriter where Evergreen Park’s former boy genius pounded out the Unabomber Manifesto and built his homemade mail bombs. You can also sit in on FBI strategy sessions and participate in the case.

A reclusive genius who built bombs in a cabin no bigger than a backyard tool shed in rural Montana, Ted Kaczynski terrorized the nation for 17 years by mailing bombs — seemingly at random — to universities and airlines. Kaczynski's bombing spree killed three people and injured 23; some were maimed for life. Americans were caught off guard by Kaczynski’s capture in 1996, none more so than Evergreen Park residents, when the notorious Unabomber turned out to be a graduate of Evergreen Park Community High School.

Drawn from the actual FBI investigation, the Unabomber experience takes visitors behind the iconic composite sketch of the mustached man wearing aviator sunglasses and a hoodie. Visitors get to enter the same cabin that law enforcement found in 1996, as well as actively participate in the case. Insight from FBI agents Terry Turchie (assistant special agent in charge of the UNABOM investigation from 1994 to 1998) and Max Noel (FBI agent during the investigation) offer narrative into the process that led to Kaczynski’s arrest. Kaczynski pled guilty to the bombings and was sentenced to life in prison.

The Unabomber Virtual Reality Experience is available for downloading for $4.99 on Vive Port. It is only available for experiencing on a VIVE VR System, which retails for $599. Read more about the Unabomber experience.
