23rd Annual Tall Trees Turkey Trot Benefits Youth Services

The 5-kilometer Thanksgiving run or walk through a residential neighborhood benefits Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook.

GLENVIEW, IL — With Halloween in the rear view mirror and declining temperatures heralding winter's frosty approach, it time for Thanksgiving turkey trots. Since it began nearly 125 years ago, the seasonal tradition has offered a great way to get in some exercise ahead of holiday dinners.

Across the North Shore and Chicagoland area, registration is open for a multitude of local running events, including 23rd annual turkey trot through Glenview's Tall Trees neighborhood.

The 5-kilometer Thanksgiving run or walk through a USA Track and Field-certified course starts 8:15 a.m., Nov. 28, at Tall Trees Park, 1421 Sequoia Trail.

Proceeds from the event benefit Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook, which offers services to 2,500 children every year, according to organizers.

Entry fees begin at $45 with reduced rates for groups of three or more. There is no registration on the day of race, and registration will be capped at 600 runners.

Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers, as will the top three finishers in each of eight age groups.

Participants may pick up packets on the day of the race or the day before from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 1512 Sequoia Trail in the Tall Trees subdivision, according to organizers. No pets, strollers, roller blades, skates, scooters or bikes are allowed at the event, and overflow parking will be available at Maryhaven Nursing Home, 1700 E. Waukegan Road.

The tradition of Thanksgiving turkey trots, which can often feature costumed participants among the competitive racers, traces its origin to 1896 in Buffalo, New York. The Buffalo Niagara YMCA identifies it as the oldest continuously run race in North America.
