Cryptocurrency Scam; Suspicious Calls From 'Village': Blotter

A resident lost $11K in a cryptocurrency scam; residents reported fake phone calls from the Village for money: Glenview Police Blotter.

GLENVIEW, IL — The following information comes from the Glenview Police Department (unless otherwise noted) and court records as a record of police activity, including incidents reported by the public and those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court.

Mustafa Khazaal, 19, of the 400 block of Norman Court, Des Plaines, is accused of criminal trespass to property, and was arrested at 1:14 p.m May 26 in the 1600 block of Milwaukee Avenue. He was released on an I-bond and assigned a court date of June 28 in Skokie.

Susana Mendez, 20, f the 1700 block of Juneway Terrace, Chicago, is accused of driving under the influence of drugs, no valid driver's license, speeding, and was arrested at 6:24 p.m. May 27 in the 500 block of Milwaukee Avenue. She was released on an I-bond and assigned a court date of July 1.

WARRANT

  • Christina Garcia-Palomo, 29, of the 2100 block of Dewey Avenue, Evanston, is accused of having an active warrant for failure to appear, and was arrested at 9:55 p.m. May 27 at the Glenview police station. He was released on bond and assigned a court date of June 11 in Skokie.
  • Marcelino J. Hernandez, 55, of the 35700 block of Franklin Avenue, Ingleside, is accused of having a warrant for failure to appear for an incident on June 25 in the 1600 block of Sequoia Trail, and was arrested at 4:16 p.m. May 29 at the Lake County Sheriff's Office. He was transported to the Glenview Police Department, processed, and taken to a bond hearing on May 30.

INCIDENTS

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • A resident in the 2200 block of Prairie Street reported at 11:43 a.m. May 25 scratches on several sides of their vehicle as the car sat parked outside of the residence.
  • A resident in the 1600 block of Greenwood Road called police at 2:47 p.m. May 25 to report sometime during the overnight hours someone used a sharp object to puncture two tires on their vehicle which was parked in the parking lot.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT

  • An employee of a business in the 1700 bl0ck of East Lake Avenue called police at 12:35 p.m. May 25 to report a disturbance by several patrons when they were asked to put face coverings on. The patrons were given trespass notice and left the property.
  • A resident in the 3200 block of Sanders Road reported at 8:59 a.m. May 31 having an argument with an unknown neighbor about owning a dog against Association rules.

SUSPICIOUS PHONE CALLS

Several residents reported at 2:21 p.m. May 25 receiving calls from the Village of Glenview asking for money in exchange for a court order. They were told it was a scam call and the Village will never solicit funds from residents.

CRIMINAL TRESPASS

An employee at a business in the 2800 block of Pfingsten Road called police at 3 p.m. May 25 to report a past customer, who they terminated their business relationship with, entered the property. The customer was given a trespass notice and left the property.

THEFT

  • A resident in the 2300 block of Poppy Lane reported at 8:14 p.m. May 26 the theft of a bicycle while left unattended in the 1900 block of Tower Drive. Reported loss is $279.99.
  • A resident in the 1000 block of Castilian Court called police at 9:16 p.m. May 26 to report the theft of a computer that was being shipped back after being repaired. Reported loss is $1.500.
  • A Brandess Drive resident reported at 6:45 p.m. May 27 responding to an email regarding a promotion from the cryptocurrency wallet "Celsius." The resident transferred ownership of 297.87 Uniswap coins to Celsius. The resident realized something was not right with the transaction and contacted Celsius who said the promotion was not legitimate. Reported loss is $11,527.57.

HARASSMENT BY TELEPHONE

An employee of a business in the 1700 block of East Lake Avenue called police at 5:34 p.m May 28 to report receiving numerous threatening messages from a caller in Oregon, Wisconsin.

NO VALID DRIVER'S LICENSE

Nara Shin, 32, of the 3600 block f Salem Walk, Glenview, is accused of no valid driver's license, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and was cited at 6:08 p.m. May 28 following an accident at the intersection of West Lake Avenue and Milwaukee Avenue. She was released on an I-bond.

IDENTITY THEFT

  • A Langley Circle resident reported at 8:06 p.m. May 28 someone withdrew $2,477.50 from their account through the Zoom application.
  • A Milwaukee Avenue resident called police at 8:24 a.m. May 31 to report someone made multiple transactions on his debit card without permission. Estimated loss is $700.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO STATE PROPERTY

Officers responded to Sleepy Hollow Park, 1800 block of Maplewood Lane, at 6:49 p.m. May 31 for a fire alarm. Upon arrival, officers discovered an unknown offender pulled the fire alarm and pulled the sink off the wall. Estimated damage is $1,000.
