GLENVIEW, IL — As coronavirus cases in Illinois continue to surge, local school districts that were offering any in-person studies are making the move to a full-remote learning environment for the rest of 2020. In a unified decision, school districts 27, 28, 30 and 34 in Northbrook and Glenview announced Wednesday they are taking an Adaptive Pause per recommendations by the Illinois Department of Public Health and Cook County Department of Public Heath.

In an email to district families co-signed by the superintendents from the four school districts, administrators cited CCDPH recently stating schools should "strongly consider remote learning given the presence of sustained community transmission." As a result, the email said the districts considered a number of factors in arriving at their decision:
- The comprehensive Northfield Township Elementary School dashboard shows substantial community transmission of COVID-19 in every metric for Region 10 (suburban Cook County), Northfield Township and Northfield Township plus adjacent zip codes.
- Staffing and substitute challenges due to isolations, quarantines, and other factors created by the increasing community spread of COVID-19
- Holiday considerations, including: expected travel under CCDPH travel guidelines; the return of college students to the community; gatherings with others outside immediate family.
"We know that you have many questions specific to your schools and schedules," the email concludes. "Again, staff and families will receive detailed information about your district’s plans in a separate email."

An Adaptive Pause is a strategy that allows for movement into any level of remote learning to prevent disease transmission during a pandemic. An Adaptive Pause may result in delayed reopening at the start of a specific school term or a pivot to remote learning once the school year is underway for school officials to have time to plan for next steps with parents, teachers and staff.
