Glenview Seniors Are Staying Safe and Social During the Pandemic

Seniors who live at Avidor Glenview are staying safe and social during the pandemic by following safety guidelines

By Rachel M. Anderson, Contributing Writer

(Glenview, IL) – The holiday season is just around the corner and it’s going to look and feel a lot different for Sheila Ryan, 60, of Glenview, Ill. The retired Catholic School teacher sold the townhome she had lived in for more than 30 years over the summer, and moved into a 55 Plus Active Adult community.

“I had a 3-level townhouse and I had been ill, so I needed one-floor living,” says Ryan, who has found that and more at Avidor Glenview, which opened its doors in Jan. 2020. “There is so much to do around here. I’m busy all the time. I just love it!”

Ryan says there’s always a class or activity to participate in. “I really enjoy the weekly current events discussion group, and the community Happy Hour. I believe I’ve made it to all but one of the Happy Hours since moving here. It’s a great way to meet people,” she says.

At a time when a lot of people are concerned about socializing due to the pandemic, Ryan has no worries. “Everyone is good about wearing masks and social distancing, and the staff keeps the common areas very clean,” she says.

Safe and social has been the Avidor way from the start. All Avidor associates have completed coronavirus testing per CDC guidelines. They wear masks at all times and use other protective gear when appropriate. In addition, surfaces are routinely wiped down throughout the day, and specialized fog equipment is used to sanitize public spaces.

“I think it’s a bit of a balancing act. We’re trying to be responsible and health conscious for our residents. We follow the Illinois Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control guidelines for best practices when it comes to Covid-19 while also being aware of the importance of social interaction,” said Cortney Malinowski, Community Director for Avidor Glenview.

The weekly happy hours are still happening, though participants are asked to wear masks and maintain social distance. The onsite fitness center remains open and classes are still being held, but occupancy in the space is being limited.

“We are of course continuing to encourage social distancing, wearing a mask, washing of hands, and self-isolating if you are symptomatic or not feeling well,” says Malinowski, “but we also want our residents to be able to enjoy the social interactions they love so much. That’s a big part of our community and the lifestyle here.”

“Everyone is good about following the instructions. If you’re in public you wear a mask. We all just follow the program. It’s really no big deal,” says Ryan.
