Glenview Swimmer Qualifies for 2nd Event at Olympic Trials

Glenbrook South junior Sam Iida will compete in the 200- and 400-meter individual medleys this summer for a chance to join Team USA.

A Glenbrook South High School junior swimmer has qualified for a second event in this summer's Olympic trials for a chance to join the U.S. national team and compete in the 2016 Games in Rio.

Sam Iida, who swims as part of the Glenview Titan Aquatic Club, qualified in the 200-meter individual medley at the Speedo Sectional meet in Wisconsin earlier this month with a time of 2:03.31, according to press release from the aquatic club. The event's Olympic trial time standard is 2:05.9.

With that time, Iida ranks 10th in the country for U.S.-born male swimmers younger than 18 and ranks 47th overall among all U.S. swimmers. In August 2015, Iida qualified for the 400-meter individual medley.

“I felt great in the morning prelims and thought I had a good chance to qualify in the evening finals," Iida stated in the press release. "I had just missed qualifying a week ago by three hundreths of a second. I was pumped up and didn’t want that to happen again.”

The Olympic swimming trials are from June 26 to July 3 in Omaha, Neb. The results from this event will select the members of the U.S. Olympic swimming team, which will compete in the 2016 Olympic Games from Aug. 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro.
