New Stand-Up Comedy In Glenview at The Laughing Academy

There is something funny happening in Glenview and if you like live comedy, you’ll want to be a part of it.

The recent opening of The Laughing Academy at 3230 Glenview Road has finally brought a true-to-form, Chicago-style venue for all types of comedy performance and instruction.
In addition to its core offerings of improv instruction for children and adults, The Laughing Academy has added a number of “After Hours” events, including improv, holiday themed events and on Friday, November 15th the first of an ongoing, monthly series of stand-up comedy showcases.

The show is produced by Highland Park’s Funnier By The Lake Comedy, which has been producing live stand-up comedy shows across the north suburbs since 2014.

FBTL owner, Larry Bloom, was inspired to bring stand-up to The Laughing Academy upon entering the building. “I came by to meet TLA owner Kim Green Hiller, to work with her on promoting her new brick-and-mortar location. But as soon as I saw the space, I said, ‘I want to produce stand-up comedy showcases here,’” says Bloom.

The Laughing Academy space is clean and contemporary—gray walls with on-brand imagery and messaging—with a vibe similar to that of a hip, Chicago storefront theater. The hallway leads to several small rooms for classes and practice, and a classic “black box” theater in the back.

These days, comedy shows seem to be shoehorned into just about any space that will allow, regardless of comfort, proper lighting, sound or professional production. But The Laughing Academy and Funnier By The Lake Comedy aim to raise the bar by creating club-level shows with great comedy from working up-and-coming as well as nationally touring talent, all in the burbs to relieve people from the hassle, expense and time required to venture into the city for a show.

Hiller is excited to host “after hours” shows for adults to enjoy. She also looks forward to introducing to audiences all that The Laughing Academy has to offer, from in-studio and remote improv and speech training for children, adults and corporate clients to a new stand-up comedy class beginning in November.

“We have a mini term in the late fall, which is a great opportunity for people new to TLA to try out classes, and for existing customers to dig deeper into the work they’ve already been doing here,” says Hiller. The mini term classes run for 4 to 5 weeks and end the second week of December.
