Union Endorsement of Glenview Next is Inappropriate
What Glenview residents need to know before casting their votes.
Private interest groups endorse candidates all the time, but you should still question their intent and motivation.
However, when you see a private interest group, the firefighters’ union, become so heavily invested in a local election and using scare tactics, I have a real problem.
The closure of Fire Station 13 generated a legitimate concern from the community, especially as it relates to response times for medical and fire emergencies. Both Unite Glenview and Glenview Next called for the station to remain open and pointed out a flawed decision-making process.

On March 22nd the Glenview firefighter union issued a scathing 5-page letter to the Village Board, alleging numerous nefarious and / or insider dealings.
On March 25th the Village Board forcefully responded, expressing dismay at the tone and promising that all matters alleged by the firefighters would be investigated.

When I learned about the closure of Station 13, I was particularly appalled that ANYONE could think that was a good idea. Looking at the existing fire station locations, you can clearly see a bias towards the central and western portions of the village. Closing the only station clearly serving the east side of town was, quite frankly, pure insanity.
Everyone needs to stop and take a deep breath.
Almost immediately the union ‘endorsed’ the Glenview Next candidates for the Board, as if to imply that the Unite Glenview candidates running for the Village Board do not care about public safety. This is ridiculous.
In my mind, it seems there is some sort of ‘unholy’ alliance between the Glenview firefighters and the Glenview Next Board candidates. Both groups have clear motivations that go beyond safety. One wants to win a union negotiation and the other wants to win a municipal race.
The firefighters have some legitimate concerns, and they need to be heard and discussed in a fair, open and balanced way, without one-sided inflammatory statements.
Glenview has its issues. An independent investigation is likely coming. However, elected officials must be independent and free from bias.
I am very troubled by the mailings and door hangers from the firefighters’ union, endorsing the Glenview Next candidates.
In the near future the Village Board will be negotiating a new contract with the firefighters. The appearance of bias or favoritism toward one side or another must be avoided.
The Unite Glenview slate has been enthusiastically endorsed by a wide variety of independent newspapers and other local well-respected officials. I ask you to join me in supporting Unite Glenview for the Village Board.
