Celebrate Passover with Matzah Toffee

A Grayslake business has been making the treat for years.

When you think of the Matzah crackers you see in the store, you might not find your taste buds getting excited. But, what if those crackers were folded into gourmet toffee?

Considering the popularity of the Matzah Toffee at Uniquely Sweets in Grayslake, it seems the idea is a good one.

“One of our specialties is toffee in general,” Erin Miller, store manager said. “We fold in all these broken pieces of Matzah cracker and it gets a drizzled in milk and dark chocolate.

The toffee at Uniquely Sweet is a simple recipe.

“Toffee is just made from butter and sugar,” Miller said. “It is cooked in a copper kettle.”

The matzah is added when the toffee is in liquid form in the kettle and then it is poured out onto a marble slab table to cool.

Matzah toffee in itself is not a new concept.

“It’s traditionally made around Passover, people make it in their own houses.”

But Miller, who is Jewish herself, said customers appreciate the toffee at Uniquely Sweets.

“I’ve done taste test comparisons and ours is pretty awesome,” she said. “It has the really good hard toffee on it that it’s supposed to have.”

In 2015, Passover begins April 3.

“The main ritual of Passover is the seder, which occurs on the first night (or, outside of Israel, the first two nights) of the holiday--a festive meal that involves the re-telling of the Exodus through stories and song and the consumption of ritual foods, including matzah and maror,” Myjewishlearning.com stated.

Matzah Toffee, though, is not limited to being eaten by a Jewish population.

“Anybody will enjoy it, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a Passover item at all,” she said.

Uniquely Sweet is located at 888 East Belvidere Road, Unit 106, in Grayslake.
