GRAYSLAKE, IL — Grayslake Central junior Hayley Breines is the 2021 IHSA Journalism Headline Writing State Champion. As both the Arts & Entertainment Editor and News Editor for the Rampage student newspaper, Breines used her journalistic knowledge and skills to compete in this year’s IHSA Journalism State Series. Placing 3rd in Headline Writing and 2nd in Copy Editing during IHSA’s first ever virtual sectionals competition on April 10, Breines became a double state qualifier. The virtual state competition was held on Saturday, April 24, where Breines became the Journalism Headline Writing State Champion.

As a sophomore, Breines was recognized by the Kettle Moraine Press Association (KEMPA) as an honorable mention in news writing, and as a junior, she earned an excellent rating for her news article Illinois Implements New Marijuana Law. With writing full of wit and precision, Breines has not only found success in journalism as an individual reporter for the past three years, but as an editor, she utilizes leadership skills that have supported the journalism program and new reporters at Central to help the program grow to its success today. Breines wishes to pursue writing in her future as well.
