Chicago Man Charged With Shooting Family Member In Zion

A Chicago man and convicted felon who was wanted for shooting a family member in Zion in October was taken into custody, court records show.

Darell M. Hayes, 33, of the 700 block of East 103rd Place in Chicago, was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated domestic battery and felon in possession of a firearm.

A Lake County judge found probable cause to issue an arrest warrant for Hayes on October 21.

The warrant stems from a shooting that occurred on October 16 in Zion, according to court documents.

A criminal complaint filed in Lake County Circuit Court alleged that Hayes caused bodily harm to a man after discharging a gun and injuring the man.

The complaint said that Hayes intentionally fired the gun at the victim, who is a family member, and at least one round struck the victim in the leg.

Court documents also show that Hayes is a convicted felon. In February 2014, he was charged with two counts of aggravated battery using a deadly weapon and obstructing identification.

In that incident, Hayes was found guilty on the charges for stabbing a person in Kane County. He was sentenced to 62 days in prison and 18 months of probation.

Hayes was taken into custody for the Zion shooting in late March and remains held in the Lake County Jail.

A judge ordered him held on a $500,000 bond, meaning he would need to post $50,000 cash in order to be released.

A case management conference is scheduled for May 17.
