GRAYSLAKE, IL — A 34-year-old Grayslake man, who was expecting his first child in November, has died after being hit by a car on Route 120 over the Father's Day weekend. The incident happened at about 11:45 p.m. on Saturday at Route 120 west of Fisher Road in Wauconda Township.

Matthew Evers, of the 1200 block of Karyn Lane in Grayslake, died at 6:30 p.m. on Father's Day, which was Sunday, at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, according to a report from the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Authorities say minutes before Evers was hit by a car, he got out of a vehicle on Route 120 and began walking along the shoulder. At about 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, he walked into the westbound lanes of the roadway and was hit be a Chevrolet Impala, police said.

Evers was taken initially by ambulance to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital and then transported to Lutheran General Hospital in critical condition, where he died a day later.

Lake County Sheriff's Office investigators are working to determine if Evers was impaired when he walked into the road. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
