Rainfall Totals, Flooded Roads, More Rain Coming for Chicago Area

Several inches of rain has fallen on northern portions of the Chicago area, leading to flooding. More rain is in the forecast this week.

It's been a rainy Labor Day weekend across Chicagoland. Several rounds of thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall began on the evening of Aug. 31, when many area residents were hitting the roadways for the holiday weekend, and continued through the early morning hours of Sept. 2. Heavy rain was also reported Monday morning across the area and left some roadways in Lake and McHenry counties flooded and impassable.

The storms also forced the Sunset Festival in Lake in the Hills to postpone or cancel some outdoor activities, including its parade.

The most significant rainfall amounts were reported on Saturday evening through early Sunday over far northern Illinois, according to the National Weather Service. The storms also brought a very isolated area of wind damage to the northwest side of Chicago on Saturday morning.

Minor flooding is expected to occur under the current forecast. But "the exact basin average rainfall amounts the rest of today and tonight will likely result in some changes to crest height," according to the National Weather Service.

Meanwhile, a flood advisory is in effect for all of Lake County. Officials are reminding residents not to enter a flooded roadway with their car.
