Explosion, Large Fire At Townhomes Displaces Several Residents

At least a dozen residents were displaced after an explosion led to a large fire at townhomes in Hainesville late Sunday evening.

The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded around 11:08 p.m. Sunday to the 0-100 block of West Big Horn Drive in Hainesville for a report of a structure fire.

Multiple residents in the area called 911 to report the fire and said that something exploded in a garage.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames and smoke coming from a two-story townhouse.

Police evacuated the adjacent townhome units and no injuries were reported to any firefighters or residents.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the first alarm level to bring additional firefighters and equipment to the scene.

The Grayslake-Hainesville Police Department closed Hainesville Road at Washington Street as fire crews responded.

More than 10 fire departments assisted the Round Lake firefighters during the call.

The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist residents who were displaced by the fire.

It is unclear what caused the explosion and a damage estimate was not immediately available but at least two of the townhomes were damaged in the incident.
