Tornado Reported in Grayslake
More than 11,000 customers without power throughout the Lake County suburbs after Sunday night's storm.
A tornado reportedly touched down in Lake County near Grayslake as severe storms battered the area with rain, hail, lightning and 60 mph winds late Sunday into early Monday morning.
Pieces of Grayslake Central High School’s roof were blown into nearby Lake Street, which was closed due to the damage. Trees and power lines were cut down, forcing the sheriff’s department to close some roads in rural areas, but no injuries were reported as of midnight. The high winds flipped over a truck in the 300 block of Barron Boulevard.

The National Weather Service has received several reports of a tornado touching down in the Grayslake area. Hail the size of golf balls fell in Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage and Cook counties.

Grayslake Fire Chief John Christian, speaking at a press conference, said the storm, which caused significant damage in a stretch of town about five miles long, was one of the worst he’s ever seen in 28 years on the job.
The storm, with several reports of a funnel cloud and wall clouds, passed over Lake County between 8:45 p.m. and 9:30 and then passed over into Lake Michigan. A tornado warning was issued for Lake County during that time span.
More than 11,000 customers in Lake County were without power late Sunday, according to ComEd, which has crews out for repairs. Overall, more than 50,000 customers lost power on Sunday night, with the largest clusters in Lake County and on the North Shore. Several thousand customers also lost power in DuPage and McHenry counties.
