A Wisconsin man was driving a Chevy Aveo when he ran into the back of a street sweeper on Route 12 in Volo, the sheriff's office said.

VOLO, IL — The Lake County Sheriff's office Technical Crash Investigations Unit is investigating a Tuesday crash involving a car and street sweeper in Volo. According to a news release from the sheriff's office, deputies were called to Route 12, just south of Brandenburg Road at 2:30 p.m. for a traffic crash involving injuries, where they found a 2009 Chevrolet Aveo and a Freightliner Street Sweeper both with major damage. Early investigation shows the Chevrolet was being driven southbound in the inside lane of Route 12 by a 59-year-old man from Silver Lake, Wisconsin, at the same time the street sweeper was being driven southbound in the same lane by a 43-year-old man from Elk Grove Village.

The driver of the street sweeper was driving at a slow speed while conducting cleaning operations of the roadway, when for an unknown reason, the man driving the Chevrolet drove directly into the rear of the street sweeper, according to the sheriff's office.

The driver of the Chevrolet was taken to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville with life-threatening injuries, and the man driving the street sweeper wasn't injured, according to the news release.
