Amazon And Uber Scam Calls, DUI: Hinsdale Cops

HINSDALE, IL — In the last few days, Hinsdale police have handled cases involving scams, a DUI, shoplifting and vandalism. Here is information from Hinsdale police reports:

Scams

• A resident in the 600 block of Claymoor was contacted by a person claiming to be with Amazon security March 31. The caller said the resident was the victim of fraudulent activity on an Amazon account. The caller directed the resident to set up a "ghost account" and link a bank account to accept a wire transfer. The victim confirmed with the bank that no fraudulent activity involving Amazon happened.
• A resident in the 400 block of Chestnut Street told police Sunday that a person claiming to be with Uber technical support called to advise the resident about adding a monetary COVID-19 benefit to his Uber account. The caller told the resident to update his account and add a credit card number. The resident discovered that no money was deposited into the account. However, a total of $226.67 was withdrawn.

DUI

• Elenzia Booker, 34, of Chicago, was arrested about 2 a.m. Saturday in the 100 block of East Ogden Avenue on charges of DUI, driving too fast for conditions and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Police spotted a disabled car with heavy front-end damage. Booker appeared intoxicated. He was released and given a date to appear in court.

Shoplifting

• An employee at Walgreens, 15 Grant Square, saw a man placing skincare products in a shopping bag about 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The man was described as white, 5-foot-10, carrying a white shopping bag, and wearing a black jacket, blue jeans and a black face mask.

Vandalism

• A glass pane on a front door was broken on Sunday or Monday at a house in the 400 block of South Park Avenue.
• Stickers were permanently affixed to a white pedestrian traffic signal sign on the northwest corner of 55th and Grant streets and to a blue and yellow "Ahead" sign on the southwest corner of the intersection. The damage was reported March 30. The DuPage County Highway Department was notified.
