Free Restring, Recycling Event in Westmont to Benefit Food Bank
Local musicians are invited to attend and recycle their old guitar strings, which are generally tough to repurpose.
If you’re a local musician on a tight budget, you might want to make your way to Uncle Jon’s Music in Westmont Nov. 5.
The music shop, which is hosting its annual food drive the first Saturday of November starting at 6 p.m., added something new this year: a free guitar string recycling event.
Musicians will be able to bring in their old strings for recycling, according to a release, and get their electronic or acoustic guitars restrung with brand new strings for no cost.

D’Addario & Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of music accessories, will be providing the complementary NYXL or Nickel Bronze Acoustic strings. A five-pack of electric guitar strings might regularly cost players around $60.
“This is our eighth year doing a restring [and] food drive and we are excited to add the new benefit of string recycling to our event,” Uncle Jon’s Music owner Jon Kostal said in the release. “In past years we have donated over 200 pounds of food, plus cash donations to our local food bank. Now, with string recycling, we are helping the environment as well.”

D’Addario partners with recycling company TerraCycle for their program Playback, which is where used strings from November’s drive will be sent. TerraCycle specializes in collecting and repurposing typically non-recyclable waste.
