Hinsdale Leaf Pickup Starts Next Week

The free program starts Oct. 24 and runs through the end of November.

The Village of Hinsdale’s annual leaf pickup program will be starting next week, Oct. 24, and running through Nov. 28, the Village announced on its website.

Hinsdale’s leaf pickup program is designed to keep streets clean and leave storm drains and sewers uncluttered by yard waste. Residents can leave kraft paper yard waste bags of leaves on their curbside for free pickup every week on the same day as regular yard waste pickup.

If you live south of the train tracks, the final pickup day will be Monday, Nov. 28. Residents living north of the train tracks will have until Thursday, Dec. 1 to collect their leaves for pickup.

The Village stresses that residents can't place leaves in the streets for removal, as they could compromise functioning water and sewage systems. Homeowners who do push leaves into the street will be fined $75 for their first offense. Continuing the habit will hike up the fine with each offense.

Hinsdale has some other guidelines for pickup:

  • Leaf pickup is unlimited, but leaves must be stored in kraft paper yard waste bags. Plastic bags won’t be picked up.
  • Bags need to be placed in the parkway in front of houses, along the curb — not in the street — by 6 a.m. on pickup days.
  • Leaf pickup is complimentary. All other yard waste still requires yard waste stickers.
  • Bags can’t weigh more than 60 pounds or 34 gallons.

As an alternative, the Village Forester recommends keeping leaves on your property and composting them as mulch to keep your trees and plants healthy.

Happy raking!
