Hinsdale Parking Deck Opens Downtown

Village leader says the deck will solve downtown's longtime parking problem.

HINSDALE, IL — Hinsdale is opening its two-level parking deck Thursday, adding 319 more parking spaces downtown.

“The parking deck will solve our downtown parking problem, which has existed at least since I moved to Hinsdale 30 years ago," Village President Tom Cauley said in a news release. "Moreover, its location off Garfield Street is ideal. It is a short walk from shops and restaurants, and because of the slope of Garfield Street, the deck is unobtrusive and blends in with its surroundings. Also, because of the slope of Garfield Street, two sides of the lower deck are open for light and air."

The two-level parking deck provides visitors to the community, merchants and their employees 189 street-level parking spaces on the lower level of the deck along with an electric charging station and may be accessed off South Garfield Street, just south of First Street, the release said.

Hinsdale Middle School is the primary user of the deck’s 133-space upper level, but through an intergovernmental agreement with the village, those spaces will be available to the community daily after 5 p.m. and on weekends as long as school events are not planned and when school is not in session, the village said. The spaces on the upper level of the deck can be accessed off South Garfield and Washington streets.

Also, part of the parking deck construction project is the repaved Washington pay lot, accessible from Washington Street. It may be used by paying the hourly rate.

Those wishing to park next to businesses may continue to pay an hourly rate at the metered spaces.

Wight Construction designed and oversaw the construction of the more than $9 million in contracts to build the parking deck, the news release said.
