How to Conserve Soil and Prevent Soil Erosion

4th Graders at Notre Dame School research soil and erosion. They wrote this article to share how people can conserve soil in our community.

How much do you know about soil? If you do not know much about it, this article will tell you what you need to know about soil. This article will tell you what you can do to save soil from eroding in our own backyards.

Many people think soil is dull but it's more than that, let us show you how. There are many types of soil usually placed in classes based on their color, profile, and texture. Each soil type is formed differently and can be found in specific places on the Earth's immediate surface, mid-surface, and deep under the surface. We hope you liked our paragraph. Next up is the importance of soil!

Soil is important to plants and animals. Soil is significant to plants because it gives them minerals and nutrients. It also helps trees stay upright by supporting the roots. Soil is a need to insects, as well, because they depend on it for food and oxygen.

There are many types of soil; over 70,000 different types are in the world. There are 6 main types of soil: clay, silty, peaty, sandy, chalky, and loamy. Soil has three different categories: sticky (which has clay soil), smooth (which has silty and peaty soil), and gritty (which has sandy and chalky). You're probably wondering which category does loamy soil go in. It is actually a mixture of gritty and sticky soil.

The soil ecosystem is important. Animals depend on soil for moisture and air to breath. An ecosystem is like the circle of life. There are creatures and plant roots in the soil, worms get nutrients from the soil, millipedes eat the worms, and the birds eat the millipedes. We need every animal to help soil stay filled with nutrients.

Soil is important to humans, too, because we build stuff on it, like houses, buildings, airports and roads. How do we keep our soil from eroding, or moving away, so plants, animals, and humans can utilize all soil has to offer? Soil is better when it has vegetation covering it. Soil is being threatened! People are not making sure their lawn is covered with grass. When soil is not covered with vegetation, soil gets washed away in a process called sheet erosion.

Now that you have found out about soil, you can help the environment by stopping soil erosion!
